Monk Talking to an Old Woman by Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, 1746–1828. This is a Spanish watercolor painting. At 79 years old, Goya was living in exile in Bordeaux, having fled the rule of Spain's King Ferdinand VII. At this point he could no longer see or hear very well. In his exile he designed an entirely new method of painting. He blackened pieces of ivory and let random drops of water create forms he would then develop. In the painting you can see a tall monk and smaller old woman. The woman appears to be frightened by something she has seen or heard as the monk tries to talk to her.
